Sculptra Q & A

Why does my face lose fullness over time?

The plump, rounded facial contours associated with youth are largely due to a thick layer of collagen that lies directly beneath your skin. As the years go by, much of that collagen is lost. That lost volume allows your skin to pool and sag into lines, wrinkles, and folds.

Restoring lost facial volume is one of the most powerful anti-aging treatments, and is the primary focus of a wide range of dermal filler formulations. Dermal fillers, however, work by delivering a gel-like formulation into your facial tissues, plumping your skin and smoothing wrinkles and folds. Sculptra takes a different approach to improve facial volume and tone.

How is Sculptra different from dermal fillers?

Sculptra is formulated from poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic substance that is biodegradable and biocompatible. Like dermal fillers, Sculptra is administered via a series of injections using a very thin needle.

Sculptra injections contain thousands of microparticles and immediately plump your skin in much the same way as dermal fillers. Once in place, however, Sculptra actually stimulates your body to produce its own collagen strands.

How long does Sculptra last?

Once you receive Sculptra, you can expect the full results to become apparent over the course of a few weeks. You might need several injections spaced over several months.

Sculptra can restore lost volume for approximately two years after the full results have developed. From that point forward, results can be maintained via one maintenance treatment annually.

What kind of recovery is necessary after Sculptra?

Sculptra injections are normally very well tolerated, and you’ll be able to resume normal activities immediately after your appointment. Mild swelling and bruising are normal side effects and will fade over the period of a few days.

If you experience any of these side effects, a cold pack can reduce discomfort and swelling. You can also speed your recovery time by massaging the treatment area for five minutes, five times a day, over a period of five days. It’s also important to avoid sun exposure to boost healing and keep your skin looking its best.
