Lip flip procedures are a relatively new option in the lip augmentation services market. However, they have proven to be a popular and highly-effective option for many individuals looking to boost the appearance of their lips. To give you a better idea of what lip flips are all about, we have answered some commonly asked questions about lip flips below!
A lip flip, also known as the Botox Lip Flip, is a cosmetic procedure that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and involves an injection of Botox into a patient’s upper lip muscle for augmentation purposes. As such, a lip flip procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and relatively painless.
To perform a lip flip procedure, a medical doctor will inject a set amount of Botox units into several places around your upper lip, including the corners of your upper lip and your cupid’s bow at the center of your upper lip. Since the injections do not cause any pain beyond slight discomfort, there is no need for numbing cream or anesthetic. However, your provider will clean and disinfect the upper lip before administering the injections.
As a neuromodulator, Botox (a.k.a. Botulinum toxin A) prevents the release of acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter that nerves release to cause muscles to contract. In our lips, this neurotransmitter is released whenever we smile or use our lips in any way. By preventing the release of this neurotransmitter and relaxing the muscles that keep the upper lip tight, the upper lip “flips” upwards to give the upper lip a fuller and poutier appearance.
There are many benefits to experience when opting for a lip flip procedure, including the following:
• Typically, more cost-effective than lip fillers
• Does not result in drastic changes to the shape and look of your lips
• Provides a fuller-looking upper lip
• Minimal downtime and recovery
• Results show up in a few days, can be noticed as little as 24 hours after the procedure, and typically last for two to three months
While there is minimal downtime and recovery with a lip flip procedure, you will likely experience some minor bruising and swelling for a couple of days after the procedure. However, this is a normal and expected reaction to the injections, so it should not cause you any alarm. The swelling will subside in short order to reveal lovely-looking lips.
You may be a good candidate for a lip flip procedure if you experience any of the following:
• Thinning upper lip
• Feel as though your upper lip is diminished whenever your smile
• Upper lip lines and wrinkles
• Looking for an alternative lip augmentation procedure to lip fillers
• Want your smile to appear with fewer gums showing
Dermal lip fillers and a lip flip procedure provide patients with similar lip augmentation results. However, they do so in different ways. Whereas a lip flip boosts your lip appearance by relaxing the muscles in your upper lip, dermal filler plumps up your lip with an injectable substance, such as hyaluronic acid (HA). In this way, a lip flip gives the illusion of fuller lips without increasing their volume. As such, there is less risk of unnatural results with a lip flip procedure.
