As we move through time, our bodies age, and our skin often wears those effects “on its sleeve,” so to speak. While aging is natural and beautiful in many ways, there is nothing wrong with wanting to maintain a youthful glow on your skin. If you hope to touch up some signs of aging on your skin, we would love to talk more about how our aging skin treatment specialists at Naturally You Med Spa can help!
The main cause of aging skin is the gradual decrease in collagen production as we age. Collagen is a fibrous protein that your body produces and keeps our connective tissues strong, healthy, and firm. Those connective tissues include your bones, tendons, ligaments, and—most relevant to us—your skin!
With that in mind, a decrease in collagen production as you age results in a looser, less firm, and less vibrant skin. When a decrease in collagen production is paired with frequent muscle contractions from the facial expressions we make every day, with or without thinking, your skin experiences a much higher risk of developing wrinkles, fine lines, and other aging spots, as a lack of collagen corresponds with a decreased ability to bounce back into form and smoothen itself out.
Furthermore, collagen is also integral to your body’s healing process. So, when you experience acne scars and other skin damage, your body has less collagen to draw from as you age, which results in slower and less effective healing.
As you age, you are likely to experience some of the following skin changes with more frequency:
• Age spots and blotchier skin
• Dryer, itchier, and rougher skin
• Dull, uneven skin tone
• Enlarged pores
• More fine lines and wrinkles
• Lost volume and increased sagginess
While there are numerous ways that your skin changes as you age, the good news is that there are also numerous treatments to slow down and prevent those changes that are both safe and effective!
Many of those treatments focus on stimulating your body to produce more collagen, which can be done through several different methods. Some collagen-inducing treatments work by inflicting controlled micro-injuries on the skin to trigger an influx of collagen to the treatment area and revitalize aging skin in a particular area. In contrast, others work through injecting natural collagen-boosting substances in a targeted area, also known as dermal fillers.
However, not all aging skin treatments work by boosting collagen production. For example, Botox injections are neuromodulators, which means they temporarily block signals between your brain and the nerves in the treated area. In doing so, muscle activity in the treatment area (usually around the eyebrows, eyes, and forehead) is temporarily suspended to give the skin in the treatment area time and space to bounce back into form, smoothening out wrinkles and fine lines in the process.
